BBC Radio 1 Producer Meets Global Academy Students

Global Academy students were joined by BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra Radio Producer, DJ Illatek this week at our G-Talks.

This week our students got to meet BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra radio producer- DJ Illatek. He has worked with the likes of Drake, Jay Z, and Alisha Keyes and well as producing masterclasses with Charlie Hedges and Mistajam to help the future generation of Radio learn more about the industry and how to get into it.

When first entering the industry – DJ Illatek first started DJ’ing at university and this is where he found his passion in the music industry. He has worked at the likes of Westside Radio and has progressed to being the Radio Producer at BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra. As a radio producer, DJ Illatek looks at creating content for social media, writing tip sheets for presenters, and creating playlists. He has worked with the likes of Mistajam and DJ Target.

He discussed with our students the different types of roles they can explore within radio, the pros and cons of being a Radio Producer and asked our students to critically evaluate videos such as Big Shaks live lounge. Here the students had to think about how such a simple video, gave him the exposure he now has. This was an excellent introduction to Content Production and our students have absolutely learned a lot from this G-talk

Have a blank book and write down your ideas.”

DJ Illateks top tip is “Have a blank book and write down your ideas.”  – he went on to explain how as creatives we can find inspiration from anywhere and this can spark at any moment and it is important we are able to document this.

After the G-Talk, students were able to network with Dj Illatek and ask him any questions they had. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to build their contact list and get real industry knowledge from an expert. Offers of being able to shadow him were made. Students then went on to interview DJ Illatek for the Global Academy BTS Campaign and do a quick-fire round on Youths Choice Radio Show.

The G-Talk was a massive success and helped boost the confidence of learners to kickstart their careers in Media Industry. Thank you to DJ Illatek for taking the time to connect with our students.
