Global Academy Alumni offers top advice to current students

One of the Global Academy originals takes a look back at his time at Global Academy before landing his current role at BBC Creative.

Global Academy alumni, DeMarkay Williams who graduated in 2018 – has shared some inspirational words for current students that look back at the last five years of Global Academy in his current role at BBC Creative.

Hello Class of 2023 and 2025! I hope you’ve started to settle into life at the Global Academy and are enjoying it so far.

You have no idea how lucky you are to be in such a special place – many people who are my age or older didn’t get the chance to be a student at GA, but you did! You’re being taught by world class professionals that will catapult you into the industry.

I absolutely loved my time at GA. Some of my highlights include:

  • Being part of the first ever promo video
  • Pitching a Radio and TV Station idea to Global
  • Being part of the Youths Choice launch team in March 2017
  • Becoming Head of Production and Station Coordinator for Youths Choice
  • Creating my first ever podcast, Black Pioneers in Media

I was in your position exactly five years ago in September 2016. I now work in the Audio team at BBC Creative where I script and edit audio promos that are played across the BBC Radio network. I was previously a Junior Podcast Producer and Editor at Spirit Studios where I worked with high-profile celebrity talent!

But most importantly, if it wasn’t for Jason, JJ, Mark, Shahlaa and other teachers past and present, none of us who graduated in 2018 would be where we are today.

If I can do it, you most certainly can! I cannot wait to come back to meet you all and welcome you into our ever-growing Globaller family.

All the best
– DeMarkay, Class of 2018
