Black history month is a time when people from all different backgrounds, beliefs, and views come together to honor and highlight social issues that maybe we don’t always get the chance to discuss. Over the course of the month, we have been learning about Black History Month in our lessons, sharing our experiences with one another, and sharing across our social media but we still felt there was something missing. We wanted our students to have a voice and share their experiences, views, and opinions on how we should celebrate Black History Month.
On 24th October 2022, we did just this. We didn’t just sit in a classroom and learn about black history month, we stood proud and celebrated the culture. Both students and staff took part in showcasing their talents and sharing their stories through spoken word, steel pan, and musical performances. The students hosted this celebration and the supportive culture we always have through the academy flowed through. The beauty of this event was each and every person, no matter what their background, beliefs, or culture joined in this celebration creating a positive, uplifting and enjoyable experience for all.
In true Global Style, we were joined by Capital Xtra’s and Ex Global Academy Student, DJ Dynamic who closed the celebration with a 1 hour set from Black and influential artists. This was a fantastic celebration for our students and everyone left the term feeling fulfilled and proud. We want to say a massive thank you to DJ Dynamic for coming back to the academy to join in the event and to all students and staff for your support.
