Karina and Ashley Interview Smooth Radio’s Jenni Falconer

Global Academy worked closely with the Women @ Global employee network as part of their celebrations for International Women’s Day, with a week of activities themed around challenging gender inequality in the workforce, and the world. Our students were involved in the delivery of one of their flagship events – ‘Tea with Jenni Falconer’.

Karina Broda in Year 12 and Ashley De Guzman in Year 13 hosted a live stream ‘In Conversation’ style event with Smooth Radio’s Jenni Falconer as part of the week. The students quizzed Jenni on everything from the challenges and highlights of her broadcasting career to which inspiring woman she’d have to a dinner party.

The session unpicked the myriad of issues that women face in the workplace and allowed Global employees and our students the chance to unpick and discuss this in a safe space.

Jenni provided a lot of top advice to Karina, Ashley and the hundreds of female Global employees who were tuned in – “You can’t be what you can’t see” was a quote which resonated with the audience showing the importance of making sure there are positive and visible female role models within the industry that young people can look up too as they start their career.

Rosie Pentreath, Managing Editor of ClassicFM.com who was one of the participants watching the live stream said

“This was such a wonderful session. Ashley and Karina, were such great hosts! Thank you so much for your time and inspiring wise words too Jenni”.

Karina Broda, Year 12 said

“Thank you Global for allowing us the opportunity to talk so openly with Jenni. I certainly learnt a lot about getting into this industry. It’s made me feel a lot more powerful as a women about to enter the media. Jenni spoke about the importance of ‘success is set by the goals you set yourself’ – that’s a quote that has really stuck with me!”.

This is just one of the many exciting experiences that our students are offered thanks to the close links that Global Academy has with our employer partners. Projects like this help to give our students access to working directly with employers to help create a more diverse and exciting industry to join.
