Students Create Content for Disrupt Space

Working With Ideas Foundation

Global Academy teamed up with Ideas Foundation to run a two-day workshop for Year 12 students to give them experience on working on a live client brief whilst learning the tools of the trade alongside industry professionals to get them to industry standard!

The work followed on from the Industry Day back in November and developed our students knowledge how to take their imagery into social, digital and outdoor content platforms.

Global Academy was delighted to work with Disrupt Space to develop Outdoor and Social campaigns to promote their roster of black visual artists and galley.
Disrupt Space is a Black (African and African-Caribbean) arts agency representing incredibly talented emerging visual artists.
This was off the back of a session we held with the six artists back in November as part of Black History Month where students got the chance to engage with artists to learn more their backgrounds, culture and artistic inspiration.
The session celebrated creativity across all cultures and backgrounds and shone a light on creatives from all backgrounds.

What Happened?

Students worked with industry professionals in a mixture of workshops and sessions.

The sessions were working on creating campaigns for the South London based Disrupt Space. Disrupt Space supports young emerging visual artists to be the best artist they can be. The work focused on six black artists to bring their work to life.

Disrupt Space challenged our students to see an increase of visitors to their website and the gallery and to get many more people engaged with their artists through social media.

First up was Lydia Thornley – a London based graphic designer, creative director and live illustrator who is based on The Trampery in Olympic Park. She focused on her recent work as a result of the pandemic and a focus on new platforms, helping clients pivot and designing new processes around people’s needs in the new normal. She also spoke about how she uses creativity to provide the respite and brought a playfulness to events that have had to shift online.

Lydia gave students some helpful hints and tips about how to prepare their campaigns.

Practical Sessions with Greg Hodgson

Next up was Greg Hodgson from EdgeGain. He works with companies like Adobe, Unity, Minecraft, The Design Museum and  Ideas Foundation.

Greg ran a really practical session on the Adobe creative cloud and gave students the tips and tricks to manage digital files, workflow, file structure, and working in the cloud.

Greg set a task for students to work on ‘Image Selection’ – in groups, students had to manage the creative process of working through their imagery and pick the images which they felt were best suited to their creative campaigns.

Greg’s second task was for students to develop social media assets to promote the gallery using the images selected. Students were taught how to develop image selections into graphics that engage audiences in social media.

The Second Day

The second day was focused on Advertising.

The days started with a presentation from Rob Pryce and Joel Barsch from OnePointFive – an experiential agency that specialises in developing and delivering unforgettable brand experiences. Students were taken through some fantastic case studies for clients like Tomb Raider, Camden Town and Nike. Students were able to ask questions and get a real insight into the world branded content experiences.

They left us with a really important quote to focus on during the rest of the workshop:

tell me and I may forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I’ll understand

Outdoor Advertising was next on the agenda.

The second session was hosted by Hannah Anderson from Global’s Outdoor Team. As a Global Academy graduate – she started off with a masterclass about the world of Outdoor Advertising including Global’s key platforms of Rail, Road and Retail.

Hannah also took students through the Do’s and Don’t’s of Outdoor Advertising!

Students were then tasked with creating an outdoor creative campaign for Disrupt Space using the knowledge they’ve got from Hannah’s and OnePointFive’s workshop.

The Best Campaign Overall

The day ended up with a showcase and the chance to celebrate the great work. The work in the photo by Charlie Larrier in Year 12 was chosen by the client as one best campaign overall along with the work from Harry Clapman, Sofija Zorina, Muhammad Pietersen and Emma Stigter.
