Empowering Year 11 Students: Afrovisibility and Windrush Project at Global Academy

Global Academy’s Year 11 students join forces with The Uncommon Collective and industry professionals to create engaging content, shedding light on Windrush and Afrovisibility, in a project that empowers young voices.

At Global Academy, we believe in the power of collaboration and hands-on learning to empower our students. This term, our Year 11 students are taking on an exciting project that combines media and English, fostering creativity, storytelling, and cultural awareness. Working alongside The Uncommon Collective, a youth development platform dedicated to supporting underrepresented children and young people in achieving their educational and personal goals, our students are set to embark on a journey of self-discovery and creative expression.

This marks the third year of our partnership with The Uncommon Collective, and each year has brought new opportunities for our students to engage with inspiring black and brown talent. These industry professionals share their personal stories, offering our students a unique insight into what it means to be a minority in various spaces. This year, our focus is on Windrush, and our students are tasked with creating fresh, engaging content that brings this important historical narrative to a 2023 audience.

The culmination of this project will be a grand finale event at the Everyman Cinema at the end of the term, where our students’ work will be showcased to a wider audience. To kickstart this exciting campaign, we invited H Boss and Bash, two immensely talented creative entrepreneurs, to join us. Their infectious energy and passion sparked curiosity among our students, igniting a wave of questions and discussions.

To ensure our students are well-equipped for this endeavor, we will be conducting mobile filmmaking sessions as part of the project. These sessions will provide the technical skills necessary to bring their creative visions to life. In their media lessons, students are diligently developing their stories, exploring the intricacies of planning and production, and crafting bespoke content that will resonate with the audience.

One of our Year 11 pupils expressed their excitement, stating,

“This project gives us a chance to showcase our true identity and I hope that my film gets picked for the finale showcase. I love working with industry professionals and having the opportunity to share their authentic voices.

At Global Academy, we take pride in fostering unique employer-led partnerships that enable young people to work directly with industry experts on real-world projects. More importantly, these partnerships provide invaluable insights into what it means to be a minority in certain spaces, empowering our students to navigate the world with confidence and purpose.

As we continue to champion projects like Afrovisibility and Windrush, we are not just imparting knowledge; we are empowering the next generation of storytellers, leaders, and advocates for positive change as we kickstart the careers of young people in the creative industry.
