Global Cultural Learning (PSHE, RE & RSE)

Our unique approach to PHSE, RE and RSE at Global Academy prepares learners for a career in the creative media industry as well as becoming conscientious, respectful and active citizens in the wider world.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and Year 11)

KS4 Global Cultural Learning (GCL) is delivered through tutor time, enrichment activities, themed assemblies and targeted workshops. These lessons and opportunities help young people develop as individuals and as members of communities.

GCL is facilitated by teaching, pastoral staff and often external agencies, who bring a unique perspective on the subjects being discussion. The GCL curriculum equips students to be responsible, respectful, enterprising, enthusiastic citizens who contribute positively to society by cultivating their understanding of fundamental British values, developing their understanding and appreciation of equality, diversity and inclusion. This is carried out by celebrating what we have in common and promoting respect for the distinct protected characteristics as defined in law. The programme also develops student’s soft skills which are important to become self-assured, happy and successful individuals. These skills include their resilience, confidence, independence and help our students to know how to keep physically and mentally healthy.

Key Stage 5 (Year 12 and Year 13)

KS5 students have one lesson per week of GCL. The curriculum supports students to be conscientious, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society by cultivating their understanding of fundamental British values, developing their knowledge and appreciation of diversity and by rejoicing what we have in common and endorsing respect for the different protected characteristics as described in law.

These compulsory lessons involve exploring the topics on equality, diversity, inclusion, staying healthy, looking at the consequences of risk-taking behaviour e.g. having unprotected sex, consent, drink/ drug driving, smoking and crime. Students recognise and learn how to manage the increasing pressures on young people from the media and wider society. Students are taught to manage their personal finances and the consequences of getting into debt. They are given strategies to manage stress as they prepare for exams, Final Major Project season, plan for Sixth Form, Apprenticeships, University or Freelance. There are also sessions about Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education.
