Exploring the World of Media Production: A Day at ENVY Studios

The Year 12 Technical Media and Broadcast students from Global Academy recently had the unique opportunity to step into the world of professional media production during their visit to ENVY studios in the heart of London.

This eye-opening experience provided them with an in-depth tour, highlighting key aspects of the sound department and the role of the colourist in post-production.

The sound department at ENVY studios showcased their recent work on Grand Designs, revealing the meticulous process of editing speaker volumes seamlessly intertwined with clips of machinery and construction. This firsthand encounter allowed the students to witness the intricacies of creating a harmonious audio experience, an essential element in the world of media production.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the visit was the exploration of the role of the colourist. This crucial post-production position involves crafting the emotional tone of a movie or show by manipulating the colors in each scene. The colourist’s responsibilities range from ensuring uniformity across shots, even if filmed on different cameras, to evoking specific moods such as drama, documentary, daytime TV, or indie film. The students gained valuable insights into how color grading can significantly impact the audience’s perception and emotional engagement with the content.

This hands-on experience not only broadened the students’ understanding of the technical aspects of media production but also inspired them to consider the diverse career paths within the industry. ENVY studios served as a living classroom, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
