Graduate Does Sound Design at Capital FM

From Global Academy to Capital FM

D’Angelo joined the Academy and immediately took a great interest in audio.  He impressed his audio teachers and  produced some great audio projects. Whilst at the Academy he gained many insights into the industry. At the end of his time, he was offered an apprenticeship with Capital FM to be a Broadcast Assistant. He excelled through his apprenticeship and was offered a full time position as Assistant Sound Designer at Capital!

Read on to see more about D’Angelo’s work at Capital and how Global Academy prepared him for his career in the industry

Working at Capital FM

D’Angelo said “During my time as an apprentice I was able to do all the roles that are required by Capital to work behind the scenes. As an apprentice I was able to produce a number of shows including The Capital Late Show with Marvin Humes”

“As I’m a DJ, I was able to use that knowledge to help create mixes for The Capital Weekender and now Capital Dance. Lastly, I was able to make all the production that goes out on air – jingles, branded intros, promos, montages, sponsorships and many more which I now do in my current role.”

How Did Global Academy Help You?

I’ve never encountered a school that has truly encouraged and pushed me into what I wanted to do. I came out with experience, connections and a career that was a childhood dream!

I was able to be part of Youths Choice which helped me understand the type of audience we should be aiming for, the sound of the station and create jingles, sweepers and montages which is what I do now just on a larger scale. It allowed me to learn software e.g. Pro Tools, Adobe Audition and Zetta, a new piece of broadcasting software that is now being pushed throughout most of the radio stations here at global.

I came out of Global Academy with experience, connections and a career that was a childhood dream!

What Advice Would You Give to a Global Academy Student?

3 things.

Be an opportunist. I travelled over 1 hour and 30mins, made new friend and most importantly made every day count that I went to the Global Academy, which then helped me get an apprenticeship and now a full time job.

Be different. Take part in everything that Global Academy offers and do more. Whether that’s staying late to practise in the radio/TV studios or show people what makes you unique.

Have a want to mindset. You need to go in everyday knowing that if you put your all in you will get something out of it. If the teachers can see it, your friends can see it, it’ll help you see it.
