Global Academy had the privilege of hosting Candice Brathwaite, a critically acclaimed author, journalist, and TV presenter, as part of our Black History Month program. Candice, whose first book skyrocketed to The Sunday Times bestseller list, enthralled our students with her inspiring journey to becoming a published author.

The event was hosted by our new Year 12 Journalism Students who made sure that Candice’s visit was not only a celebration of her literary achievements but also an opportunity for our students to delve into her insights, passion, and values. She engaged in a captivating discussion about her first Young Adult novel, ‘Cuts Both Ways,’ which was published just last year. Her words resonated with Globallers – inspiring them to chase their dreams with relentless determination.

During her talk, Candice Brathwaite underscored the importance of self-belief, growth, and male allyship. She encouraged our students to embrace their unique voices, follow their passions, and not be deterred by obstacles.

In a warm and interactive session, students had the chance to pose questions to Candice, gaining valuable insights into her creative process, writing techniques, and the challenges she faced on her path to success. Candice’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for young people shone through as she shared her experiences.

The highlight of the event for many was the opportunity to have their copies of ‘Cuts Both Ways’ signed by the author herself. Students eagerly lined up to meet Candice and receive a personal touch to their copies of the book. For these budding writers and avid readers, it was a moment they’ll cherish forever.

Candice’s engagement extended beyond the book signing, as she also graced the studios of Global Academy’s radio station, ‘Youths Choice.’ Her interview was an engaging and informative discussion, shedding light on her journey, her thoughts on the power of storytelling, and the significance of diverse voices in literature.

Meeting Candice was an incredible experience. Her words made me believe in myself and my dreams. It’s not every day you get to meet someone who’s made it big as an author. She’s proof that dreams can come true.
