Global Academy Students Shine at UAL Insights Spring School

This article highlights the experience of Global Academy students as they participated in the UAL Insights Spring School programme, gaining exposure to various creative disciplines and university life.

The UAL Insights Spring School programme, hosted by the University of the Arts London (UAL), offers an invaluable opportunity for young individuals to delve into the realm of creative education. For our Year 12 students, this programme served as a gateway to explore a diverse range of subject areas, collaborate on mini-projects, and connect with UAL’s community of tutors and students, including Outreach Ambassadors.

Both us and UAL are committed to supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds through initiatives like the UAL Insights programmes. Targeting those without parents or guardians who have completed a university degree, living in priority postcode areas, receiving benefits for living costs, or belonging to the category of looked after children and care leavers, this programme aims to break down barriers to entry into creative higher education.

During the programme, our students immersed themselves in a dynamic learning environment, exploring creative subject areas, working in specialist workshops, experimenting with new creative processes, and tackling university-level mini-projects. With pathways spanning games design, photography, media communications, advertising, graphic branding, digital art, design for 3D printing, filmmaking, music and sound, and set design, students had the opportunity to tailor their experience to their interests and aspirations.

In the lively halls of the University of the Arts London (UAL), a group of our eager students found themselves immersed in a world of creative exploration during the UAL Insights Spring School programme. Among them, Siobhan Marshall, a Year 12 student, recounted her experience in UAL LCC Filmmaking with excitement and gratitude.

“I had the absolute honour of going to UAL LCC Filmmaking for a four-day experience where we went through different areas in order to create our own short film.”

– Siobhan Marshall, Year 12 Student, Global Academy

Beyond filmmaking, students had the opportunity to explore a diverse array of creative disciplines, collaborate on mini-projects, and engage with UAL’s vibrant community of tutors and students. From graphic branding to set design, each pathway offered a unique avenue for students to unleash their creativity and expand their horizons.

The UAL Insights Spring School programme stands as a testament to UAL and Global Academy’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowering students from all backgrounds to pursue their passions in the creative arts.
