Year 10 Students Kickstart Their Media Careers at Brentford FC

Students attended BBC masterclasses in Radio, Social Media and Mobile Journalism as well as quizzing Brentford FC past players and seeing behind the scenes of the premiership club.

A selection of Year 10 students got the chance to spend the day learning about the ins and outs of football media in a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience with Brentford FC Community Sports Trust and BBC Young Reporter.

The day included a hat trick of hands-on media masterclasses to help us develop our practical understanding of how sports broadcasts come to life across Radio, Social and TV. Students spent time with  BBC London Sports Editor Phil Parry about how the station uses radio and social media to bring their sports broadcasts to life.  Students also heard from Liam MacDevitt – current Bury FC player and presenter for the BBC’s Football Focus and MOTDX about what it takes to produce and present programme programmes on TV. After lunch, it was time to get creative in an active masterclass on mobile journalism from Marc Settle – a trainer from the BBC Academy. Brentford FC Comms Team also spoke to our students about how advertising, partnerships and PR form a key part of the club.

The day was completed with an inspirational Q&A from Brentford’s Amber Lloyd (Female Football Development Manager and Brentford U18 Academy Coach) who spoke about the rise of Women’s Football as well as a former professional player – Marcus Gayle who is the current “Ambassador” for the premiership team – they even got grilled by our own students in a mini press conference. After the Q&A – Globallers got a chance to go pitch side with an exclusive look around the stadium too!

“I had a brilliant day! It was super exciting to get hands on work experience for a career in sports broadcasting. I loved the fact we could hear from professionals from across the BBC and Brentford FC to help inspire us for our futures”
